VIC: October 2 tipped as Vic election date
MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP - October 2 is firming as Victoria's election date, although coalition
MPs have been told to be ready in case Premier Jeff Kennett visits the state governor in nine
days' time to call a September poll, The Sunday Age said.
The newspaper quoted a senior cabinet source as saying the most likely date was October 2 -
the Saturday after the AFL grand final.
The date would mark the seventh anniversary of the coalition winning power on October 3,
1992, it said.
However the newspaper also quoted one Liberal MP as saying they had been told to be ready
any time from next Sunday and another as saying the election would be held by the first
weekend in October.
It said Liberal strategists believed Mr Kennett was committed to a 25-day campaign - the
shortest the state constitution allows, meaning September 11 was the earliest possible date.
