New shuttle service offered in and around OV

The town of Oro Valley has partnered with the RegionalTransportation Authority and Sun Shuttle to offer a new dial-a-rideservice to the public.

A kickoff event will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Fry's Food &Drug, 10450 N. La Ca 3/4+-ada Drive.

Curb-to-curb service will be offered on Sun Shuttle vehicles todestinations such as Pima Community College's Northwest Campus, theNorthwest YMCA and Foothills Mall.

The service also will connect riders to Sun Tran routes fortravel throughout the region.

One-way trips in the program's boundaries are $2.50 perpassenger.

Reservations are required to use the service, which will run from5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Passengers must reserve a ride by 6 p.m. the day before a trip.

Casas Adobes goes to the dogs Saturday

Casas Adobes Plaza will host Paws in the Plaza from noon to 3p.m. Saturday.

Pet adoptions, sidewalk sales and specials, raffles and otheractivities will be featured at the event, which will raise money forthe Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

A $1,000 shopping spree to Casas Adobes Plaza will be raffledoff at the fourth-annual event.

Casas Adobes Plaza is at the southwest corner of West Ina andNorth Oracle roads.

Democrats of OV will talk border Feb. 14

Karl Tucker of Humane Borders will be the guest speaker at theDemocrats of Oro Valley's next meeting.

The event is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Monday at the OroValley Public Library, 1305 W. Naranja Drive.

There's no charge to attend Monday's event.

Tucker's presentation, "View from the Water Truck," a 10-yearperspective of Humane Borders, will address humanitarian effortsalong the border.

Councilman is meeting with residents Tuesday

Oro Valley councilman Joe Hornat will host Council on Your Corner2.0 from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, 11000 N. La Ca 3/4+-ada Drive.

Hornat's discussion with residents also will be streamed live onthe Internet.

75-piece band to play in SaddleBrooke

Tickets are on sale for the Tucson Concert Band's Feb. 18 winterconcert at the DesertView Performing Arts Center in SaddleBrooke.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $19 in advance or $21 at thedoor.

The Tucson Concert Band's 75-member ensemble will perform a widevariety of musical styles from pop and jazz to marches and classicalcompositions.

Donate diapers, get free entry to park

People will be admitted free to Tohono Chul Park Friday with adonation to the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona.

Children's diapers in sizes 1 to 6, adult diapers in all sizesexcept small, and sanitary wipes will be accepted to enter the parkfor free.

Tohono Chul Park is at 7366 N. Paseo del Norte.

Park hours Friday are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Marketplace hosting art fest Feb. 19-20

A two-day arts festival is scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 at theOro Valley Marketplace, which is at East Tangerine and North Oracleroads.

The Festival of the Arts will feature local and nationalartisans, food vendors and activities for children.

Admission is free.

Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 19 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Feb. 20.

Jewelry, ceramics, paintings, glass, photography, baked goods,crafts, fiber and other work will be for sale.

Kids, sign up for camp

Saguaro National Park's Tucson Mountain District - Saguaro West -will offer a three-day Junior Ranger Wilderness Day Camp over RodeoBreak for children ages 10 through 14.

Camp hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 and 11 a.m. to 9p.m. Feb. 26.

The event features hands-on activities such as hiking, compass-and map-reading, radio telemetry tracking of the desert tortoise anda night hike with storytelling.

Participants also will learn how to select a campsite and pitch atent, cook with a lightweight backpacking stove and hike safely inthe wilderness.

Special arrangements can be made for dropoff and pickup times.

The camp will be held at the park's Environmental EducationCenter, 2700 N. Kinney Road, about two miles northwest of theArizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

Cost is $30 per child for all three days. Space is limited, andadvance reservations are required by Feb. 21.

Marana Chamber to honor businesses

The Marana Chamber of Commerce will present its annual Communityand Business Builder of the Year awards beginning at noon Feb. 17 atTower Theatres, 5755 W. Arizona Pavilions Drive. A reception andfood sampling will take place first, beginning at 11:15 a.m.

Fire station plans groundbreaking

The Mountain Vista Fire District is holding a groundbreaking at10 a.m. today at 1175 W. Magee Road for its new fire station andadministration facility.

Station 610 is scheduled for completion in November.

Refreshments will be served.

Reyna earns utility contractors award

The Tucson Utility Contractors Association has named MaranaConstruction Division Manager Morris Reyna as its Agency/MunicipalMember of the Year.

TUCA president Chuck Johnson said the honor goes to someone whohas participated in the organization all year and provides value tothe membership as well as the community as a whole.

Reyna has been with Marana since 2002.

Marana seeks police service volunteers

The Marana Police Department is recruiting residents and businessowners for the Volunteers in Police Service - VIPS - program.

The VIPS program offers experience in crime prevention, communitypatrol, administrative support and many other activities. Specificactivities include traffic control, school and neighborhood events,fingerprinting, Amber Alerts, special event assistance and mobilecommand post support.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, be a Marana resident orbusiness owner, have a valid driver's license, pass an extensivebackground investigation and have access to a computer and e-mail. Aminimum commitment of eight hours a month is required. Winterresidents are welcome to join the program.

Training depends on area of interest. Following classroomtraining, orientation is conducted in specific areas ofresponsibility. Additional field training and a ride-along with anofficer are required for those planning to participate in theCitizen Patrol.

Learn how to save on your Trico bill

Trico Electric Cooperative will host a workshop from 9 to 11 a.m.Saturday to help people save money on their electric bills.

Participants will receive free energy-efficiency kits to help getstarted at home.

The event takes place at 8600 W. Tangerine Road.
