NSW: 12 arrested in gang crackdown
SYDNEY, Feb 19 AAP - Twelve men, including nine illegal immigrants, were arrested in
a police crackdown on Asian gang crime in the city over the weekend.
The men were charged with a number of offences, including break and enter with intent
to steal, goods in custody and malicious damage, police said.
Police also conducted 75 knife searches in the Sydney CBD.
The nine illegal immigrants have been taken to the Villawood Detention Centre.
The arrests come a week after a high profile raid on Sydney's George Street cinema
strip, where five men were arrested but later released without being charged.
"Police will continue to conduct high profile operations in the CBD," City East Region
Commander Dick Adams said in a statement.
"The message to gangs and gang members is quite clear: do not bring your grievances
and weapons into the city."
